This position is posted as Environmental Health and Safety Lab Safety Manager, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Environmental Health and Safety Manager.

Job Description

The EHS Laboratory Safety Manager serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for NAU's laboratory safety programs and evaluates and manages components required to comply with the OSHA Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.1450), including the following:

  • Administers NAU's Chemical Hygiene Plan and all provisions for procedures, engineering controls, safety equipment, personal protective equipment, and work practices to protect laboratory members from the health hazards presented by hazardous chemicals. Reviews and revises the plan as needed (at least annually).
  • Provides Chemical Hygiene training, which instructs on laboratory hazards and the provisions of the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Identifies circumstances when specific laboratory operations will require prior approval and/or special provisions such as medical or exposure monitoring.
  • Manages provisions for additional protections required for work with particularly hazardous substances, including select carcinogens, reproductive hazards, and substances which have a high degree of toxicity.
  • Coordinates NAU's annual chemical laboratory inspection process and associated documentation and communication.
  • Coordinates with university faculty and staff to draft, implement, and review site-specific Chemical Hygiene Plans.
  • Implements and maintains the Hazard Communication Program within the scope of laboratory safety


This position also manages the administration of the Laboratory Safety Program through the following activities:

  • Provides subject matter expertise on waste management at the point of generation in laboratories and advocates for practices that minimize waste and environmental impacts.
  • Manages certification and inspection programs for fume hoods, safety showers, eyewashes, and other specialized laboratory safety equipment.
  • Manages chemical inventory reporting for purposes of emergency management, first responder awareness and compliance with the Laboratory Standard.
  • Oversees investigation of laboratory accidents and recommends actions to prevent such incidents.
  • Coordinates with NAU Capital Assets Planning and Operations departments to discuss safety requirements for laboratory spaces. Issues code analysis and recommendations within the scope of laboratory standards, and reviews construction and renovation plans to ensure compliance with laboratory health and safety codes.
  • Responds to or provides guidance for response to minor chemical spills in laboratories.
  • Collaborates with EHS colleagues to provide occasional cross-department coverage and service referrals.


Job Duties and Functions

Annual Lab Safety Inspection - 40%

  • Coordination/performance of annual laboratory inspections for NAU's chemical laboratory spaces to include physical inspection, reporting and documentation of compliance issues and resolution of compliance discrepancies, and coordination with university faculty and staff to draft, implement, and review site-specific Chemical Hygiene Plans


Chemical Hygiene Program Management - 30%

  • Management of Chemical Hygiene Program components including regulatory responsibilities associated with the Chemical Hygiene Officer role, safety training development and delivery, annual review and revision of NAU's Chemical Hygiene Plan, development, and revision of laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs), and provisions of employee protection for work with particularly hazardous substances, and evaluation of university compliance with the OSHA Laboratory Standard


University Lab Safety Consultant - 15%

  • Coordination with university faculty, staff and lab members to advise and provide technical guidance regarding laboratory best practices, hazard assessment and control, safety codes, policies and procedures and promotion of sustainable/green laboratory practices


Lab Building Compliance - 10%

  • Coordination with NAU departments to review laboratory space building and renovation plans for compliance with laboratory safety and health codes and review of existing spaces for adequate chemical storage and engineering controls and safety fixtures


Other duties as assigned - 5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree AND
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology or Biochemistry
  • Master's degree in related field
  • Certification in relevant area of subject matter expertise (e.g. Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Safety Professional, and/or Certified Instruction Trainer

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $62,996- $68,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
